“Calves burning, hips locked in hard against the ice, one arm locked off low as I swing an ice tool high overhead. I’ve trained for ice and mixed climbing since the first season I discovered ice, mixed, and alpine climbing way back in 1988. And today, when I close my eyes and remember all the spectacular places ice and mixed climbing have opened to me, there is no doubt that my training has taken me into some of the wildest places on our planet. Ice and mixed climbing are both core skills to alpine climbing, and fun in their own right.”
