Welcome to our ‘Meet our Connectors’ series; a multi-week social media series dedicated to highlighting one of our OnwardUP Connectors every few weeks!

Name: Cassie Ayoungman

Location: From Siksika Nation, but living in Canmore, AB

Why do you love it living where you do?

My attraction to this place stems from the transformative impact of the mountains on my well-being.  The decision to relocate was driven by a desire to be in proximity to what truly brings me joy, especially climbing. I reassured myself that if the move didn’t resonate, I could always return, but the reality exceeded my expectations, and I envision staying here for the long haul. The community and the folks I have met have been amazing!

Favourite place within walking distance of your house?

EpiCanmore and Eclipse. Looove me some gooood coffee! and of course all the trails surrounding Canmore. Everything is so close.
Activity of choice?
Climbing all year round and my new found love, biking!

A Highlight from last year?

Oh, reflecting on last year, there were definitely some standout moments and, well, not all of them are for public sharing. 🙂 But if I had to pick one, it would be the moments I spent challenging myself more in climbing and soaking in the lessons it brought. My mindset went through a real transformation – becoming more patient with myself and easing up on the self-criticism and having supportive friends to experience these with. Plus, having my supportive bike crew with me was a game-changer. Trying my hand at my first enduro was an absolute blast. No big expectations, just embracing it for the experience.

What’s one piece of gear that is always in your backpack and why?
I would have to say my Petzl Meteora Helmet. I wear it all year round. It’s light. I put it through a lot and it’s still kicking! How cold is too cold?
If I’m layering up to the point where I feel like the Michelin Man’s long-lost cousin, and my breath freezes mid-air forming a frosty fog, well, that’s Mother Nature’s way of saying, ‘Maybe cozy up indoors, Cassie!!
Sheesh!
One thing you have learnt in the mountains that you wish everyone knew?
In the mountains, It’s an ongoing journey of learning and personal growth. One thing that I’ve come to appreciate is not to take unnecessary risks, that the mountains will be there another day. These miistakiists (mountains) can also be a mentor for us, guiding us to continually understand ourselves and refine our skills to keep ourselves safe out there. Emphasizing the significance of consistent practice and skill refreshment is soooo dang important.

Name a non-profit in your community that is doing amazing work/or that you’re affiliated with?

Without trying to boast, I’d like to mention our organization, Soul of Miistaki. We have grown so much and I am so passionate about this work and how far we all have come.  There are many other organizations doing amazing work as well!!
A value you feel you align with, with OnwardUP’s values?
Advocacy is a value that strongly resonates with me and aligns seamlessly with the ethos of OnwardUP. When I relocated to Canmore, the OnwardUP team reached out to me, expressing genuine interest in supporting the programs I was running. I can’t express how grateful I am for their ongoing support. It means so much to me.
